The Rewards of Tenacity

An Unusual Summer
My sabbatical of 15 months has at long last ended and it was worth every moment that I stepped back. I have pittered and pattered the past few months. But all summer long I have felt as if I was preparing for "something" and then, in late July, the deluge began. And it wasn't rain from Tucson's monsoon season.
The thought had occurred to me that I should prepare a traveling exhibit of sorts to include all of the French Beaded florals that I have been creating for the past few years. (The Asiatic Lily pictured in my last blog post finally got planted!) I offered the Exhibit and it was accepted by the Cactus Wren Art Gallery & Nest in Tubac to begin in early August. While I finished the pricing of my annual delivery of wearable art jewelry to the Tubac Center of the Arts, I was also mapping out the Exhibit for the Cactus Wren space with hope of delivering to those two locations on the same day. As it happened, just as I have for past three summers - I delivered a collection including some new, original designed beauties, to the Tubac Center of the Arts.
In the midst of those adventures, I was invited, along with three other artists, to demonstrate my artistic process at CATALYST SAACA Creative Collective in Tucson. They were hosting a special evening of cultural exchange with a delegation of visiting artists from Kazakhstan, in partnership with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance, and Chevron. Seriously? How does one say "no" to that? So I dropped all preparations for Tubac and prepared a demo to display and explain my work with raw stones including wire wrapped pendants and, of course, my story necklace "Desert Transition".

My reward was a wonderful evening communicating through interpreters as well as experiencing up close the awesomely unique artistry of these international ambassadors. We came together one on one with heart warming smiles and handshakes that honestly stirred emotions of unity and connectedness. The kind eyes said it all!
Lastly (well maybe), the icing on the cake from that evening included another invitation, one to apply for a juried gallery exhibit that will begin in September and last four months. I'm awaiting a decision on my entries submitted. There are still 11 days left in August. What more can happen?

The Spring Desert Enfolds Me
We live in the Sonoran Desert which is blooming like crazy this time of year and early next week we will head back up to the Mojave Desert to see the flora bloom there. Who would guess that we would be desert dwellers in our golden years?
The Drama of DesignNOTE - The beaded pieces contained in this depiction of a futuristic Sonoran Desert reflect my first attempt at designing my own creations in French Beading – excluding the Asiatic Lily designed by Lauren Harpster of Bead and Blossom. With her permission, I have included my creation of it in vivid colors of my choice. I have also redesigned its body to “nurture life” via an attached umbilical cord of sorts extending to an adult insect of my design. I have also altered the Lily’s stem work to include a “youngster” emerging from an additional pod which I added to the flower’s structure.
This post is going to be a short one as we leave in three days. I am still deciding on whether or not to bring a new, very small, hand sized, "fun" project from my beading bucket list with no demands for completion. I am 90% sure I will leave home without one this time.
As you can guess, next Month's Blog will be about our trip. You will also get results of my Tohono Chul submission! Until then, enjoy this time of year and get outside.
Best to you all,
Tina

Springing Forward 2024
My Shameless Promotion
My presentation to Members of the Tucson Handweavers & Spinners Guild on February 27th was an utter success. After delivering a twenty-minute PowerPoint tour of my artistic phases, I landed on my latest obsession with French Beading. My final "ta-dah moment" in beads was amplified by lots of applause and several gasps at the sight of my finished Black Aeonium piece designed by the very talented Lauren Harpster @beadandblossomstudio. The experience presenting to a large group was empowering for me and the audience's reaction and applause was so encouraging that I literally jumped up and down with delight. (Yup, I was actually overpowered by joy...) LOLI am hoping to submit my concept of a French beaded sculpture in early April for an
upcoming juried show at Tohono Chul that will run May 16 - August 5, 2024. The Exhibit's theme this time is "The Exotic Sublime | treading softly". At the current moment I am prototyping bugs! I'm going out on a limb here by telling you my plan because I don't believe in jinxes. My hope is to append "something that crawls" to a French Beaded piece I constructed many months ago... Here is one of my bugs and the Asiatic Lily (another fabulous design by Lauren Harpster) from which it will spring forth and "tread softly"... The bugs are my design! Keep your fingers crossed that I meet the deadline...
We are Off, Again
Next month we head back to Northern Arizona and this time visit Monument Valley and Moab, just to name a few stops along a 1400 mile route that we will drive in nine days. One of our stops will be to Bryce Canyon which we've driven through but never hiked. Barring any major snow hazards we hope to get down into the hoodoos! If you haven't yet visited the Southwest, we highly recommend early spring if you want to avoid the crowds. Even during other times of the year, research the views in less travelled areas. If you do enough research you can ride down roads and capture what many others will never see. Here's one vision from a drive we took in Hurricane, Utah, about three years ago where we stumbled onto a perch from which I caught a glimpse of Zion National Park in the far distance. A priceless, unrushed, silent experience with no crowds. We are doing lots more car touring than hiking these days which presents many photography opps are unexpected, thrilling, and striking!
I enjoy keeping in touch with you! My wish for you this Marchy Month is that Spring -- in whatever form it takes for your part of the country -- opens you up for new adventures, especially before the heat of summer comes your way.

Winter 2024 from Tucson
Happy Valentine's Day
Strange as it may seem, and as in love as I am with life and my hubby, I am not a huge fan of the heart theme that plasters everything from cellophane to cereal. So when I want to express my sense of heart-ness I tend to create my own shapes, mostly free hand. I consider them such an important symbol that, for me to produce any, is a rarity. Here are a very few from those creative moments in hopes of filling your upcoming day with True Love.
Should I sell online again?
I've been hearing from a few of you that this long distance relationship isn't working well for you. As you may know, I sell through several retailers in and around Tucson. This has allowed me to focus more on my artistry than marketing. But it feels like the shift is coming back, where people I am coming to know and those who have purchased from me before are feeling left out on accessibility to my creations. If you don't travel to Arizona, there is currently no chance to purchase my works unless you contact me for a commissioned piece. SPECIAL REQUEST- If you are one of those people who misses browsing my site and discovering uniquely designed gifts for yourself and others then please let me know as I'm considering reopening my online shop at Tina's Sedona with items priced suitably for direct purchase from me. If you have not purchased from my business then I would appreciate you visiting my work to make your decision.
Settling in - at last
I cannot believe that it will be 5 years in May since we left Florida and moved to the Great Southwest. Ups and downs, ins and outs, have -at last- led us to a peaceful, non-nomadic life once again. I know that's true because we have begun to paint interior walls -at last- in colors that reflect who we have become during this phase and in this place. And it is beautiful. Terra cotta and greige stone colored walls are a nice fit for living in the Sonoran Desert. Subdued spring green has been slightly sprinkled in our kitchen adjacent to a wall where we breakfast in the shadow of terracotta sandstone. The bedroom is next! I think that lovely spring green is somehow going to filter into that space. I'm picturing purple and mustard accents making an appearance but I don't know just where. (Dark purple doors sound like fun.) Oh, but to finally have a choice of colors in which to live! This all feels so wonderful, just like the Tucson sunsets. And all of the colors are being drawn from this one piece that Nathan bought locally at an estate sale.
Tucson Gem Show Update
Congratulate me! I stayed home. I beat my addiction this time. 'Nuf said.
A Shameless Promotion
Last month I promised you a story on this but I failed to notice that I don't present to our local textile Guild until February 27th so there is a delay in reporting on my "ta-dah moment" in beads. The least I can do is provide you with a small peek... and "yes" that is tiger eye!
(You really should be following me on Instagram.)
My wish for you...
That you are staying warm and dry wherever you are this winter. It has been so cold in Tucson that I bought myself a new pair of slippers!

December already?
Winter coming to the Southwest
Living in the Southwest has advantages with fairly stable weather in spring and early fall. It is piping hot in the summer! Yet winter can be a whole other story. Cooler winds are now migrating through the Tucson desert and snow is already hitting Northern Arizona and heading into Utah. If you have ever experienced Utah's famed Zion National Park, then you already know the beauty and the wonder of its sandstone panorama. But if you have neverMonday, October 2, 2023

Summer Has Flown
Beat The Heat
Rumor has it, here in Tucson, that there are just under 40 days left to the monsoon season. Summers are an interesting adventure here, especially this past week when a weather alert brought us out of our chairs and to instantly snapping pictures of what looked like oncoming disaster. I am familiar with the crazy "lightning capital of the world" experiences of our past life in Florida but these clouds were looking atomic. Is it weird that I found myself thinking about our homeowners policy? We live in the Sonoran desert which gets as hot as hell and is destined to get hotter next summer (oh gawd). But aren't so many of us living in excessive heat these days? and for longer periods? Here's a thought...

Summer Musings of a Distracted Artist
that my artwork will be on public display in one place, an actual Gallery, until August 7th, 2023.Are you artistic? If you have no interest in this subject, just skip down to "Time to Lighten Up" and read about my summer sale.
If so, is your mind full of ideas that engulf it, spin it into distracting visions on a daily basis, and make it nearly impossible for you to narrow down the best idea with which to engage?

Celebrating My First Gallery Exhibit
Four years ago on May 11th, Nathan and I hit the road for the Southwest. We really only look back when Facebook sends us the Memories of life in Florida. Our new life here is very different and very satisfying. At least once a week we celebrate the barely explainable freedom we feel from making a major move in our senior years. The most recent benefit is the new friendships we have found by joining clubs in our area. Before leaving Florida, we just did not consider how a cross country move (and a pandemic) would strip us from in-person contact with nourishing community interaction.
For me, joining the Tucson Handweavers and Spinners Guild has been a life saver. The extremely talented resources there are well established in their artistry, and they are encouraging and motivational. They accept me as an artist which helps me see myself as an Artist.
As a result of my growing confidence in that role, this week I'm celebrating having been...

The Post With No Name
WOW. Almost two years have passed. I cannot cover the whole timeframe in this post but suffice it to say we love living in Tucson, Arizona. In 2019, we started out in St. George, Utah, moved next door to La Verkin for the pandemic, and as soon as we got that second covid vaccine in March 2021 we hightailed it to Tucson to find an apartment. Before the lease was up, we knew Tucson would be our permanent home. If you don't follow me on Facebook then you have no way of knowing that we bought a manufactured home in a senior community last March 2022. It's quiet but very active!
I have found my tribe of beaders and artists here. I was lucky to get some guidance on where...

River rock pendant finally finished

My last post in August ended with intentions to complete a river rock pendant with an Idea I had just formulated. Well, that idea waxed and waned until October when I could finally get back to it. The result is something unique (for sure) but also comical. Every time I look at it I see a slug wearing suspenders! At three inches long, it will be a real topic of discussion for anyone who wears it. My next step is to suspend it from either leather or a chain. Even a thick cord or an elegant ribbon might work. How might you finish it?
Your Input Requested
The creative process usually leads to more creativity. The "opulent slug" at left has lead me to consider selling some of my pendants as separate items and, if desired, letting the customer decide how they want to display it, if they want it hung and, if so, on what material and with what type of closure. As a result, some of my beaded tube necklaces would no longer be enhanced with a pendant but would just drape one's neck with unadorned beauty. Since you are a prospective customer, I sure would like to know if this change would better encourage your purchase of a wire wrapped pendant necklace should you see one that you really like and have options to customize the final piece. I am pretty sure I would like to experiment with this idea. Your thoughts?
La Verkin Desert in September
Thanks to our valued customers for being so patient with the lack of correspondence. We took the month of October off to settle into our nest in La Verkin, Utah and explore nearby neighborhoods. The high desert is all around us and it took just 12 minutes to get to this spot on the outskirts of town. I hope you enjoy our "Adventure in Yellow" which inspired me to make this unusual necklace & earring set from yellow opals and tiger eye crystals which I bought at the Tucson Gem Show in January.
